Initial registration
Initial registration image Foreigners who stay for more than 90 days after their arrival in Korea must get registered.
When former nationals of Korea who are now foreign nationals and foreign nationals born in Korea who are eligible to stay in Korea intend to stay in Korea for more than 90 days from the date they obtained eligibility, they must get registered.
 
 
※ Alien registration is exempt to the following people
People engaged in diplomacy, public affairs, and implementation of agreements between their countries and Korea and their family
People engaged in important tasks of diplomacy, industry, and defense and their family
Those recognized by the Minister of Justice as being exempt.

Two color photos (3cm 4cm)
Acceptable verification for your status of residence
Fee: KRW 10,000

Alien registration period
Foreigners who intend to stay for more than 90 days in Korea: Within 90 days after the date of their arrival in Korea.
 
Foreigners who became eligible to stay or foreigners who changed their status of stay: Immediately
 
Issuance of Certificate of Alien Registration
Respective immigration offices or branch offices
Seoul Immigration Office in the case of foreigners residing in Yongsan-gu
 
Reissuance of Certificate of Alien Registration
Causes for reissuance
① When Certificate of Alien Registration is lost
② When Certificate of Alien Registration cannot be used because of wear and tear
③ When space for filling out necessary information is insufficient
④ When items for Alien Registration (name, gender, date of birth, nationality, etc.) have been changed.
Reissuance application
Reissuance application must be made within 14 days of a reason for reissuance has occurred.
Required documentation
① Passport
② Application for Reissuance of Certificate of Alien Registration
③ Acceptable verification for reissuance (when the certificate was lost)
④ One color photo (3cm x 4cm)
⑤ Old Certificate of Alien Registration (when reissuance application is made because of wear and tear, When a space for filling out necessary information is insufficient, or when items for Alien Registration have been changed)
⑥ Fee: KRW 10.000
 
Returning Certificate of Alien Registration
The Certificate of Alien Registration has to be returned to Immigration Office when one of the followings occurs:
When leaving Korea permanently
When abandoning foreign nationality and becoming a Korean national.
When the registered foreigner has died
When the registered foreigner does not need Alien Registration
※ If Certificate of Alien Registration is not returned on time, a fine will be imposed.
 
Carrying and showing Certificate of Alien Registration
Foreigners staying in Korea must carry their passport, entry permit for foreigners, or Certificate of Alien Registration. (Foreigners less than 17 years old are exempt.)
When an immigration officer or government employee of cities, counties, and district in charge of immigration issues requests showing of passport or Certificate of Alien Registration, foreigners must show the document that they carry.
Foreigners who do not carry and show their passport or Certificate of Alien Registration can be punished by Article 27 of Immigration Control Act.
 
Changing content of Alien Registration
The content of Alien Registration must be changed when one of the followings occurs:
① Changing in name, gender, date of birth, and nationality
② Changing in passport number, date of issue, and the term of validity
③ When the organization to which foreigners with artist (D-1), student (D-2), and general trainee (D-4)visa holders belong has been changed (including change in the name of the organization).
Changing content of Alien Registration
① The foreigners themselves or agents should report changes by submitting acceptable verification to an immigration office
Required documentation
① Passport
② Certificate of Alien Registration
③ Documents which verify the change.
※ When registered aliens to not report changes in the content of Alien Registration to an immigration office within 14 days after changes have occurred, a negligence fine will be imposed on them in accordance with Article 35 of Immigration Control Act.
